I downloaded OpenAI's Whisper from GitHub and ran it across some of the videos that I've downloaded. I set the language to Japanese and the output to English. I try with a short clip, until it works, then I run the whole video.

It takes about 10 minutes to process each minute of video because I'm using a laptop, I don't have a gaming GPU.

But when I look at the subtitle output there are repeated phrases that aren't in the video, from the very start of the video, and are repeated all the way through. I've seen videos online with this same problem too, so other people must be using Whisper.

I think this will work, but I'm too busy on step 6

1. open the audio in Audacity
2. write down the position of all gaps when nobody is speaking
3. Use ffmpeg to break the video into parts
4. For each part, use Whisper to create the subtitles file
5. Join it back together into one mkv file using ffmpeg or mkvtools
6. Touch your penis while watching the video

If anyone would like to help figure this out, the tools needed are:

[b]1. A Linux installation.[/b]

If you are on Mac or Windows either use VirtualBox and install the Ubuntu ISO as a virtual disk.

Or if you just want a temporary Docker machine that will delete itself when you shut down, install Docker Desktop, open it, then type this in a console:

Then open http://127.0.0.1:6080/#/ to see the desktop. You can use TightVNC instead if you need more features, just open "localhost"

[b]2. A way to download the video[/b]

To download any video from almost any web page, open a terminal and type:

pip install -U youtube-dl

Once it is installed you can type:

cd ~/Videos
youtube-dl https://your-video-url/

If it doesn't work, open a bug report for youtube-dl here:

https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl

If it still won't work, press F12 in your browser and look in the "network" tab. The video will be there somewhere, you just have to find the link to it and pass it to youtube-dl.

If you get your videos from torrents, the best Ubuntu torrent client is Transmission - just search for it in the Ubuntu app store.

If none of this works, you can always use a screen recorder!

[b]3. Transcribing and translating the video[/b]

OpenAI's Whisper can do this for you. To install it, type:

once this is installed, you can create subtitles for a video like this:

But like I said above, I think we also need to split the video into pieces first.

[b]5. Useful tools[/b]

Handbrake - This can be used to convert videos to standard sizes and use standard profiles. This means it'll work on mobile devices and set top boxes. It's free, install it from the Ubuntu app store or "sudo apt install handbrake-gtk" I think.

ChatGPT can tell you which commands you need to run if you get stuck. You can ask it anything at all, for example:

* What do I need to type to split a video into 5 minute chunks? I'm using Ubuntu
* What the fuck does this error message mean and how do I fix it?
* How do I make a video file with subtitles in different languages using ffmpeg?

Using this one rather instead of raw Whisper, as the VAD (Voice Activity Detection) solves much of these problems. I run this on Google Colab with Google Drive using it's CLI mode (the Gradio UI is problematic handling large uploads), and is also better to get transcriptions from both medium and large models.

Also, extract only audio out to cut down transfer overhead when uploading to Google Drive.

It will still so called "hallucinate", but from what I seen is mostly "Thank you for watching" kind, which is obvious to ignore.

If you still want to do it manually you can use lossless-cut.

Once you have a very rough subtitle rip file (.srt) file or even a machine translated srt file from subtitle libraries online, then editing the srt file and better syncing it with the video, I highly recomend an open source program called "subtitle edit". There are lots of tutorials on youtube on using it, as well using it with various autotranslation and audio to text programs. Subtitle edit has incredibly conventient player/editor built in that allows you skip from one subtitle to the next and show just each clip of video with the subtitle.. This is an enormous time saver as it allows you to skip most of the video and concentrate only on sections with subtitles and how the time sound and text coordinate. 
To edit you just edit it live in text or time start/end with edit windows next to reduced sized video display.

For changing size resolution and other aspects of the video I recommend freeware AVidemux which is not very intuitive but can do almost anything for resizing making clips changing format,compressing etc . It will even doing some simple editing. You really need to watch youtube videos though to learn how to use it. Once you have spent a little time with it is very fast to use.

Before you try to create a subtitle file from scratch here are a few places you can often find .srt sub files (and in different languages too.) You can also upload say chinese .srt files and the site can autotranslate them for you (and it adds the file to their library. )

the main problem is most of the files are autotranslated from chinese .srt files and the original quality was not great to start and after autotranslate get worse! The good news if you want to use subtitle Edit it is quite quick to improve them and then share online.  The other problem with the site is that the search is very weak so you spend a lot of time sifting through listed files. You need to get used to the low quality search and poor interface but it is probably the single largest source of srt files available.

A better organized site with some improved translations too, but is quite small in number of srts and requires registering if you want to download more than 4files/day ( up to 40 files/day) is :

This is a nice site because you can use IDM or video download helper to download the .srt files separate from the video. If you already have the video this is great and more importantly hard coded subtitles on sites like sextb are often very poor quality machine translated and then cant be edited.

You may need to setup IDM or Video download helper to recognize subtitle .srt or .vtt etc files on that and other sites that embed .srt files instead of hard coding .
